Social media marketing benefits are proving significant results irrespective to the size of any Business online. It is now the most attractive media vividly chosen by many companies to conquer their Online marketing goals. Even though webmasters have been benefitting from SEO since many years, the hype created to social marketing has created confusion to invest in SEO or in Social media.
Now you are going to see some statistical records of the total percentage of social media and search engines’ online users. However, I am neither giving an advice nor a conclusion to choose SEO or Social media or both together from these stats. The reports are very authentic (used by reputable blogs like Mashable), will give brief idea about the percentage of online stats, people using social media and search engines.
Online Stats from Pew
The Pew Internet Research center (provides stats on issues, attitudes & trends shaping America and the world ) stated: 65% of Online US Adults Use Social Networking Sites like Facbook, Linkedin and Myspace which marks 50 percent of the entire US adults.
Now, this report will certainly give strong signals for business people/website owners to primarily choose social media for their online marketing strategy.
Let’s see Search Engines stats:
Another survey from Pew finds that 92% of online US adults use search engines, making them the most popular and best used sources on Web while Email comes in the second place.
As you can see, the above stats clearly states that majority of Online users are from search engines although there is a rapid growth(50% growth since 2008) in the number of social networks users. So, can we just go with SEO to gain the bigger percentage of search engine audience?
Which is Best: Social Media Marketing or Search Engine Optimization?
Theoretically social networks are hot places to share/distribute/promote your business website’s links right from the beginning you have created a level of audience in your network. Simply, it provides instant chance to promote your business stuff that can lead to instant results. This concept of instant promotion attracts more and more businesses to opt for social network marketing basically. But SEO is opposite to this concept of promotion. You need to carefully Optimize your website and apply several strategies like on-page, linkbuilding etc.. to get results.
However, if you don’t SEO your website it is not going to appear in search engines and if it won’t appear there you will literally lose all the people who use search engines to find your business.
On the other hand social media is not that fruitful as it looks. If you focus only in promoting your stuff, it will leave bad reputation to your social audience instantly. You need a social media strategy to engage your audience. You need content (blog, articles, news, videos etc..) which is optimized, to share with your social audience. A social media program without Optimization is futile or such marketing is simply leaving money on the table.
There will be no success either you choose SEO or Social media if you have no strategy in place. A strategy that has both SEO and Social media will add 100% success to your online marketing efforts.
Complement your Business with SEO + Social Media or Vice versa
Why? SEO and Social Media are actually inevitably linked.
How are they linked?
Google uses the data from social network sites like Facebook and Twitter to incorporate in its search results. It is because; in social sites any webpage or link gets popular when it has more number of shares, likes, votes, links and comments. This is similar to Google’s concept of evaluating the quality of a link by Link-Popularity, a link or page that gets more references from other sites is considered the more relevant and popular link.
It is like this: if you share your business page/link which has good Optimized content, the link will get more engagement from your audience in the form of likes, comments and shares. This social behavior will send good signals about that link which will eventually bring link popularity (Google’s metric of qualifying a link) and good chances to Rank top in search engines.
SEO + Social Media Marketing had several significant benefits indeed rather choosing just one.
Benefits of Adding SEO with Social Media or Vice versa
- SEO develops a website that is search engine friendly which helps in gaining SE traffic and SMM helps in distributing the content(developed from SEO), engage its network, result in bringing direct natural traffic.
- Good Optimized content in social sites attract Traffic rather un-optimized content and can let the page/link go viral. Such links are relevant (as they naturally referred) and can lead better visibility on search engines.
- When optimized, your facebook and Linkedin business pages can directly rank in Search engines with keywords that reflects your business, just as your web-pages. This will expand your online brand presence one step higher than SEO alone does to your website.
Look at the below image of Google results for Pepsi.
Conclusion:
You shall not squabble on saving your investments by slashing one in favor of other because SEO and SM together will extend your business reach majority of online users = more Traffic = more Leads = more Conversions.
